Scared of WP hackers?

Beef your WordPress security with our 3 tips to help prevent hacks.

3 tips to keep your WordPress website more secure.

Heard hacker stories? We have first-hand experience in cleaning up the mess that hackers leave behind. Apart from having a secure web hosting server, here are 3 things you can do to improve the security of your WordPress website.

Tip #1: Store backups in another place:

Heard the horror stories where websites get held to ransom and companies pay thousands of dollars to get them back? Ransomware happens – and it can happen to anyone (including you). One of the simplest “insurance” steps you can do is create backup storage away from your website. Many people store backups in the root directory of their website, but if a hacker breaks in, and freezes your website, they can easily delete or freeze your backup, too. Storing them in another place, where the hacker cannot get to them, makes site restoration super simple without having to pay a ransom. Talk to our team for advice about your security options.

Tip #2: Consider separating MySQL from WordPress:

Another change you can implement is to move the MySQL database out from WordPress core. This means, even if your website is hacked, the database may be protected.

Tip #3: Keep software up-to-date:

We consider this tip a no-brainer, but so many people don’t keep their websites up-to-date, so we’ll repeat it. Often plugins and core upgrades are fixing security vulnerabilities. If you see your website needs updating, run a backup (which you’ll store somewhere else) and update the software.

What happens if you’re hacked?

It can take an enormous amount of effort to clean a hacked website. Sometimes, we have to clean it multiple times to make sure we’ve got rid of everything that’s not supposed to be there. And it can cost a lot, because of the time spent doing it.

Start by buying a subscription to Sucuri, a malware clean-up service. This is a cheaper option than engaging  a developer to work through all your code. If this fails, call us on 1300 333 737. We’ll take a look to see how we can help.
